The Alberta Alcohol and Drug Abuse Commission (AADAC) and the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission (AGLC) partnered to pilot Responsible Gambling Information Centres (RGIC) in two Alberta casinos. The RGIC places information and a resource person within the casino with the overall goal of raising awareness and reducing the risk of problem gambling. Calgary’s Deerfoot Casino and Edmonton’s The Palace Casino served as the pilot sites for providing on-site information and assistance for gamblers.
In March 2006, AADAC and AGLC contracted Praxis Research to conduct an evaluation of the RGIC pilot project. The evaluation consisted of the following research processes:
- literature review;
- key informant interviews; and
- survey of casino patrons pre-RGIC and post-RGIC.
Praxis prepared a report focusing on measures of the effectiveness of the pilot sites as well as recommendations to AADAC and AGLC on the future direction of the program.
