Socio-economic Impact Assessment
Project Name | Decommissioning of the Beaverlodge Canadian Forces Base: SEIA and Consultation Program |
---|---|
Client | Northern Alberta Development Council |
Project Type | SIA-SEIA |
Timeframe | 1984 |
In preparation for the decommissioning of CFB Beaverlodge in central Alberta, the Northern Alberta Development Council retained Praxis to undertake a socio-economic impact assessment (SEIA) of the closure.
Following the SEIA, Praxis also conducted a consultation process with local communities potentially affected by this closure. As part of the process, Praxis developed a questionnaire delivered to all military personnel. Questions focused on their expenditures, use of services, and other aspects of their interaction with the surrounding communities.
Praxis also interviewed businesses and community service agencies in the communities to determine the impact of the closure; reviewed other base closure studies available through the Department of National Defence; and interviewed provincial social service and economic development agencies to obtain their views on the affect of the closure.
This was documented in a report and then reviewed in a series of public workshops and meetings in the communities for their comment and input.
