Project Name

Sherritt International’s OBED Containment Pond Spill

Client
Sherritt International Corporation
Project Type
Private Sector
Timeframe
2013 to 2014

In late 2013, the containment pond at the OBED coal mine breached allowing 645,000 litres of water, silt and coal fines to be released into the Athabasca River just east of Hinton, Alberta.  The resulting plume travelled down river finally dissipating before reaching Fort McMurray, Alberta.  Sherritt contacted Praxis to assist them with the communications and consultation related to the Aboriginal communities along the river including those in the NWT.  Praxis was also requested to provide communications and consultation with the ENGO’s and NGO’s both within and outside Alberta as required.  AS part of a larger Sherritt lead team, Richard Roberta and Ken Shipley lead the communications and consultation processes over three months to date.  Materials have been generated and shared with the communities and ENGO’s, community and Chief to Chief meetings held, along with site visits to the mine site for members of various levels of government, industry, Aboriginal organizations and the media.
