Public and Stakeholder Consultation
Project Name | Muskwa-Kechika: Support and Outreach Program |
---|---|
Client | Muskwa-Kechika Advisory Board |
Project Type | Provincial Government |
Timeframe | 1997 to 2000 |
The Muskwa-Kechika (MK) consists of 4.4 million hectares in northeastern B.C., of which 1.17 million hectares are designated Class 1 provincial parks. In designated “special management areas”, located outside the park areas, restricted resource development is permitted provided the environmental values in the area are recognized, accommodated and protected.
An Advisory board was appointed to inform government on the management of the MK area. In addition, a special trust fund was created to support special projects and planning initiatives within MK. Over a two-year period, the Advisory Board retained Praxis to plan and implement a broad-based outreach and public education program to reach local, regional, provincial and international publics.
Praxis supported this program with a communications strategy to inform and educate affected stakeholders and interested public about the MK, and what its designation represents. This involved educational outreach; stakeholder meetings; a toll free call-in line; development, support and maintenance of a full featured website; a speakers series; and a comprehensive advertising strategy. Also, Praxis prepared a display series of 20 full-colour display panels, brochures and other materials.
