Client | Alberta Environment |
Project Type | Provincial Government |
Timeframe | 1997 to 2000 |
Kananaskis Country (KC) is a multiple use area located on the eastern slopes of Alberta’s Rocky Mountains. KC is approximately the size of Nova Scotia. With local and regional tourism growing substantially, KC was under pressure for increased day use, overnight accommodation and recreation development.
Alberta Environment contracted Praxis to undertake a province-wide consultation process on KC’s recreation development policies. Praxis conducted an eighteen-month public involvement process, which included the creation of a Process Advisory Committee (PAC) to review the consultation process. PAC included representatives from ENGOs, user organizations, leaseholders, “gateway communities”, and First Nations.
Praxis employed numerous methods to obtain input from Albertans on the future of recreation development in KC. These included province-wide random sample surveys, 1-800 call-in lines, internet accessible information packages and online surveys (launched through Praxis’ website), regional meetings, and issue-based working groups. Based on the results of the public consultation process, Praxis prepared a final report for Alberta Environment entitled “Analysis and Recommendations.”
