Public and Stakeholder Consultation
Project Name | Petro-Canada: MacKay River In-Situ Oil Sands Project SEIA |
---|---|
Client | Petro-Canada Oil and Gas |
Project Type | SIA-SEIA |
Timeframe | 1997 |
In association with Dr. George Kupfer and Dr. Ted Van Dyke, Praxis worked with Petro-Canada Oil and Gas to develop the socio-economic impact assessment (SEIA) and public consultation process for its 20,000 bbls per day project in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. This project involved extensive contact with the community and regional service agencies; infrastructure organizations; First Nations and Métis leaders; industry; and all levels of government in the development of the SEIA.
A very non-traditional SEIA resulted from the process. First, the community and regional residents received practical and useful information specific to their area. Next, Petro-Canada and the government received the findings. This resulted in the production of a “plain language” report for the community analyzing the impacts of this project and the cumulative social, economic and community effects of up to 18 major oil sands projects proposed within the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.
